House Insurance

Common Questions

Unexpected damage to your home can be expensive to repair. House insurance is designed to provide financial protection against insured events such as fire, storm, flood, earthquake and other types of damage, depending on the policy.

A suitable policy can help with the cost of:

  • Repairing or rebuilding your home
  • Damage caused by insured events
  • Certain associated costs following an insured event
  • Other benefits included within your policy

Having the right level of cover can give you greater financial security if something goes wrong.

The amount of house insurance you need isn't simply based on the market value of your property. This includes the land value of the home which doesn’t need to be accounted for in the house insurance cover. This is a common mistake in New Zealand.

With all our clients we complete a total loss calculation which estimates the cost to rebuild your home in the worst case scenario. By completing this calculation, the provider we work with then provides a ‘SumExtra’ guarantee on the estimated cost to rebuild as follows:

SumExtra is a benefit which provides eligible home policyholders extra cover at no extra cost. If your home is damaged or destroyed in a natural disaster and your Sum Insured isn’t enough to pay for the rebuild or repair, with Vero’s SumExtra benefit you’ll receive up to 10% extra cover. Or, if the loss to your home is caused by an event other than a natural disaster, with SumExtra you’re covered for the costs to rebuild or repair your home even if the cost exceeds the Sum Insured.

To be eligible your Sum Insured must be at least the value of your estimated rebuild cost (exclusive of GST), which needs to be less than three years old.
